Should I Stay or Should I Go? Keeping Older Healthcare Workers Engaged

Overview

This 2019 qualitative study explored the workplace experiences of healthcare workers age 50 and older, and the considerations that influenced their decisions about staying in the field, pursing other employment, or leaving the workforce altogether.

Participants believed that they benefitted their organizations through their life experience, as well as their professional expertise. They valued employment as a way to maintain physical, intellectual, and social wellbeing. As they aged, participants appreciated employers who provided opportunities to learn new skills and who supported a healthy “balance” between work and personal life.
